• Indiscriminately index the Internet.

• Are not exhaustive.

• Each cover their own portion of the Internet.

• Use their own unique methods of search grammar.

• Typically retrieve thousands of “hits” but prioritize them according to relevancy.

• Examples are HotBot (www.hotbot.com) and AltaVista (www.altavista.com).
