Typically done by sending a “subscribe ‘listname’ ‘Your Name’” to listserv@machine.net
Do not send “subscribe” or “unsubscribe” messages to the list - A common mistake but in the paper world would be tantamount to sending a subscription change request as a letter to the editor of the New York Times
