Pegasus Mail by David Harris
Official Homepage. Product works on a PC. Rather robust.
  http://www.pegasus.usa.com/
cc:Mail
Lotus's Homepage for cc:Mail. The corporate standard. Its features were advanced but is not easy to interface with Internet mail. Requires an administrator to maintain a directory of all users. Remote use is difficult.
  http://www.ccmail.com/index.htm
Eudora
Qualcomm's Software for the Mac, PC, Newton and PalmPilot. Freeware version is excellent. Commercial version has additional features including more advanced filtering.
  http://www.eudora.com/
Netscape Mail Clients
Mail client with Netscape Navigator 3.0 and Communicator. Has some advanced options but uses proprietary methods to include sound and imbed HTML

  http://www.medmatrix.org/SPages/Discussion_Forums.asp
CataList, the official catalog of LISTSERV lists
Searchable listing of Listserv lists by key-word or by host site. Alsp points to archives when they exist.

Mailing List Software

LISTSERV Home Page
The classic discussion list software and the most popular. As of 11/1/97 is serving over 71,000 lists to 22.000,000 subscribers. A free version is availaon-profit use.

  http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/
ListProcessor Home Page
Commercial version continuously improved. Freware verion available but has not been improved in several years. Robust filtering. difficult to learn but worth the effort.

FTP

FTP tools are included in Internet Browsers. The resources mentioned here are useful to keep one's software investment current or to facilitate the use of your computer. Most downloadable medical software is for undergraduate medical education.

Getting Started

StuffIt Expander
Indespensible tool for the Mac user who downloads material from the Internet. Freeware. Usually included with the browser.
DropStuff with Expander Enhancer
Useful tool to speed Stuffit expander on the Power Macintosh and also allows you to compact (stuff) your own files or folders for uploading. Shareware $30.
PKZip for DOS and Windows16 bit and 32 bit.
Used to be the most popular compression / decompression application for the PC. Can be found on Download.Com by searching for "PKWare." Shareware. I think you may use PKUnZip (part of the package) for free.
WinZip Home Page
Now thought to be the most popular extraction and compaction program which can expand compressed ".zip", " .uue" or ".hqx" files into a form that is usable on your PC. Slick interface with a "wizard" that makes program installation easy. Shareware $29
Fetch
The most popular FTP client on the Macintosh. Can be retrieved using a Web Browser. On occasion I still find this useful. Especially useful when uploading a file. ftp://ftp.dartmouth.edu/pub/software/mac/Fetch_3.0.3.hqx
WS_FTP Light Edition
A Windows FTP client which can be used for free by gov't educational or home use. Again, very useful for uploads. Requires registration. http://www.ipswitch.com/downloads/ws_ftp_LE.html

Computer Maintainance

Apple Computer Software Page
Download updated system software for the Macintosh. http://support.info.apple.com/ftp/swhome.html
Microsoft Products
From here you can access support for all of Microsoft products as well as service packs and updates. http://www.microsoft.com/products/default.asp

Medical FTP Sites

Medical Matrix - Medical Software
A listing of 3 sites which contain medical software. Download with caution! Medical Matrix requires free registration. http://www.medmatrix.org/SPages/Medical_Software.asp#Databanks
KnowledgeBank - MedicaLogic
MedicaLogic's site for sharing encounter forms, note templates, handouts and letters. http://www.medicalogic.com/knowledge/knowldge.html

Software and Shareware

Simtel.Net
A massive archive of PC software. Probably the oldest and longest running. http://oak.oakland.edu/simtel.net/
Info-Mac HyperArchive
Info-Mac is the granddaddy of all Macintosh software sites. Well controlled so software appears virus free (I have not gotten one in over 10 years). Arrange by date or name or search. http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html
HealthyPC.com
A Ziff-Davis site which provides support for PC Users.
Download.Com
Excellent site for retrieving Freeware, shareware and Demo software. Picks Macintosh or PC according to the computer you are using. Shows most populat downloads. Responsive.

Telnet

One of the original methods of interacting with the Internet. There are few reasons for the average user to learn telnet but there are still instances when a terminal session is useful, such as interacting with a dial-up hospital information system.

Software Programs

CRT
A telnet client for the Windows PC.
  http://www.vandyke.com/products/crt/index.html
NCSA Telnet FTP site
An excellent Telnet program for the Macintosh. Most recent version is from June 95.
